As well as celebrating our 15th anniversary and the completion of our Treasured Spaces project, this year we celebrated the Triangle Garden’s Forest Garden project, the first phase of which was funded by Waitrose Hitchin.
The Forest Garden is a designed plantation of ‘unusual edibles’ such as Chilean Guavas, Honey Berries, Almonds, Goji berries, Cobnuts, Szechuan Peppercorns and edible Fuchsias. It will take several years for the trees and shrubs to mature, but some are already producing fruit, including apricots and quinces. The garden should need no feeding and very little watering once established, with its nitrogen fixing plants providing valuable nutrients. Once the ground is covered by herbs and other useful plants, the main task will be harvesting.
“The Forest Garden is a really exciting and experimental project”, said Vicky Wyer, “and we’re delighted that NHDC have just given us permission to extend it further along the River. Now that we have our weekly Garden Club running, initiatives like this become possible. We welcome new members to the Garden Club, which runs every Friday morning.
