Happy 15th birthday to us!

work in progress on the mosaic
Monday, 8 June 2015

This year marks the Triangle Community Garden's 15th anniversary and to celebrate, volunteers have been busy creating a new community mosaic with the help of local mosaic artist Jane Visick. The mosaic is made up of 9 panels each representing the rich variety of wildlife that can be found at the Garden such as insects, birds, bats, plants, pond life etc.

Under Jane’s artistic guidance, each panel has been designed and created by groups involved with the Triangle Garden, including 17th Hitchin cubs, Hitchin Boys School Year 10s, members of our learning disability project Growing Ability, volunteers and trustees. The mosaic will form the centrepiece of the soon-to-be refurbished meeting space at the Garden, which will have new raised sleeper beds, new surfacing and two new pergolas. A demountable rain-proof shade sail will enable the space to be used as an outdoor classroom, and new pollinator-friendly planting will help to enrich the Garden for bees and other pollinating insects.

Funding for the refurbishment works has been provided by environmental charity Groundwork under its X Marks the Spot ‘Treasured Spaces’ scheme. Last year we raised £5000 towards this, £1800 of which was generously contributed by Benslow Open Gardens. This money has been trebled by Groundwork UK resulting in a total of £20,000 for the works. Work on site will start in mid-May and the hardworks will be completed in time for the Triangle Garden’s Open Day on 7th June from 12-4pm. Visitors will be able to see the new mosaic in all its glory.

The Triangle Garden’s Friday Gardening Club have been preparing the area and will play a key role in planting up the pollinators’ garden, along with members of the Garden’s Growing Ability, Growing Gang and Growing Health projects, which help adults with learning disabilities lead more fulfilling lives. A special volunteer day will be held on Sunday June 14th 10am-12.30 to finish the planting and will be open to all. All welcome!
